Commercial cancer fighting dog food

Just curious to see what brands of commercial cancer fighting dogs foods might be out there. We have a PetSmart near our home.  One of the bloggers mentioned Nature’s Variety, but that is not locally available.  Lucy is a large breed dog and is somewhat of a picky eater.  We have been giving her chicken and beef but I would like to find a commercial product.  I have looked over the Dog Cancer diet download but did not see specific commercial brands listed.

thanks to all who have put their knowledge forth.

  1. I’m thrilled that you are looking at diet as a way to fight this cruddy disease! I am thoroughly convinced that Zeus’s diet is a huge factor in why he far far surpassed his prognosis.

A lot of the members on this site feed grain-free foods. We personally went with the Halo brand of food (we have PetCo here instead of Petsmart, so not sure if it is available to you) because it was specifically recommended by Dr. Dressler in his book. He recommended the homecooked cancer diet but acknowledged that not everyone has the time or money to do 100% cooked. In that case he recommended one-half homecooked per his recipe and one-half Halo because it is low in carbs. According to him, you want low-carb b/c carbs are easily broken down into simple sugars and the cancer cells feed off of the sugars. Made sense to us so we switched.

Please note that Halo is NOT grain-free but it is low-carb. Again, most members here are big proponents of grain-free, so it would probably be worthwhile to search the nutrition blogs to see their recommendations.

    Good luck!

  2. If you are going to feed dry, grain-free, kibble… feed one that has the least carbohydrates in it. http://dogfoodanalysis.com/ is a great web site…. but you may still need to call the manufacturer for the carbohydrate content. We have been told that cancer feeds on carbs and have since stopped feeding any carbs to our dog.
From our research, all of the adult dog food by Orijen has 25 % carbs in it. Acana Pacifica, another good food, has 27.5% carbs.
Currently, any Orijen or Acana dog food has a plan with buy 12 bags, get one free. Just ask for the coupon booklet and save your receipts and UPC codes.
PetSmart carries the “Blue” brand of dog food, it is a 5 star premium dog food, but I don’t see the carb content. You can call them at (800) 919-2833.
If you can go to a raw diet…. there is a place that will ship it to you: http://www.darwinspet.com/

  3. Hi there, great question. Well, the reason you won’t see any commercial brands listed in Dr. Dressler’s book is because he really advocates all home cooking over commercial food when fighting cancer. However when that isn’t possible, the goal is to eliminate carbohydrates in commercial foods. Starches and grains are two key ingredients to avoid.

While you won’t find any “cancer fighting” foods on the market (after all, it would be illegal for manufacturers to say that their food will fight off cancer), what you will find are healthier foods that don’t have the ingredients that are shown to promote cancer growth. Read labels closely to avoid them.

See our Nutrition Blog and search for “Grain Free” for more information.

  4. I feed Honest Kitchen dehydrated mixes with Primal raw grinds added to lower carbs even lower. I use specifically Thrive, Zeal, Embark, Love and Preference mixes for Honest Kitchen.

  5. Home cooking can be good together time. Gabby especially loves to watch me cook and to smell the food in progress. She’s hoping for dropped morsels of course but it’s still good together time. In her darkest times, the only thing that lifts her spirits was cooking a batch of food. We made our recipe from the “Helping Your Dog Fight Cancer” book.
